The Mapúa-PTC College of Maritime Education and Training (CMET) successfully hosted its student bootcamp at the Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna (Mapúa MCL) campus in Cabuyao, Laguna. The event welcomed aspiring maritime students seeking first-hand exposure to future careers in the global shipping industry.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Maritime Leaders
The bootcamp opened with remarks from C/E Alfredo G. Haboc, Mapúa-PTC CMET Deputy Dean and PHILCAMSAT Senior Adviser for Shipping Education Business. To guide prospective cadets through their academic options, program chairs detailed CMET’s core degree tracks:
- BS Marine Transportation (BSMT): Presented by C/M Dennis R. Dumoran, focusing on navigation, seamanship, and vessel operations.
- BS Marine Engineering (BSMARE): Presented by C/E Ruben C. Bolivar, highlighting marine propulsion, auxiliary systems, and shipboard engineering.
Real-World Insights and Life Onboard
Addressing the future of seafaring, C/E Mark Phillip R. Laurilla—PHILCAMSAT Training Manager for Digital Transformation and Innovation—anchored a discussion on the evolving rewards and technological advancements within the maritime profession.
Second Mate Daimler Dave D. Nisco followed with a realistic look at “Life Onboard,” offering attendees practical insights into the daily routines, challenges, and opportunities of working at sea.
Hands-On Leadership: The Captain’s Challenge
To cap off the event, participants joined the “Captain’s Challenge” workshop. This interactive simulation put the students’ problem-solving, critical thinking, and leadership abilities to the test—mirroring the practical, simulator-backed training that CMET cadets experience at Mapúa MCL.
